MIG welders remain the workhorse for panel replacement and sheet-metal repair because they run clean on thin gauge steel with minimal distortion. Inverter welders are lighter, draw less current and suit workshops where power supply is a constraint. Plastic welders handle bumper and trim repair without replacing the panel.

The right vehicle lift depends on your bay height, floor slab and the work you do. Two-post lifts give full underbody access for suspension, exhaust and gearbox work and take up the least floor space. Four-post lifts are more stable for wheel alignment, long service jobs and storage stacking.

Scissor lifts sit low and can be surface-mounted or recessed, which makes them the practical option for showroom-adjacent bays, low-roof workshops and quick-service or tyre-fitment work where the vehicle only needs to come up a short distance.

An air compressor is sized on delivered air volume and working pressure, not motor power alone. Add up the consumption of everything that runs at once — spray guns, sanders, air tools, booth equipment — and specify the compressor machine against that peak demand plus headroom.

Piston compressors suit intermittent duty in smaller workshops and are the more economical entry point. Rotary screw compressors are built for continuous duty, run quieter and cooler, and are the correct choice where a spray booth or production line needs uninterrupted air all day.

A spray booth is the single biggest determinant of finish quality in a panel shop. Airflow design, filtration and cure temperature control whether you get a clean, dust-free finish first time or spend hours polishing out contamination.

Configuration depends on your building: airflow type, burner and fuel choice, pit or ramp entry, and whether you need a combined spray and bake cycle or a separate prep area.

In most body shops the spray booth is the bottleneck. Every hour spent masking, sanding or priming inside the booth is an hour it is not spraying. A prep deck moves that preparation work into its own extracted, lit station so the booth stays productive.

A prep station gives controlled extraction and lighting for sanding and priming without contaminating the rest of the workshop. Paired with a booth, it typically lets a shop push significantly more vehicles through the same floor space.

Filters are the cheapest part of a spray booth and the most common cause of finish defects. Once ceiling or intake filters load up, airflow drops, booth pressure changes and dust starts landing in wet paint.

A booth normally runs several filter types together: ceiling or intake filters that clean incoming air, floor or paint-stop filters that catch overspray, and exhaust filters that protect the extraction fan and ducting. Each has its own replacement interval based on hours sprayed, not calendar time.

Structural repair on a modern unibody vehicle has to bring the shell back to manufacturer dimensions, not just look straight. That means a bench that anchors the body rigidly, pulling towers that apply controlled force in the right direction, and measurement to verify the result.

A dent puller lets you repair damage from the outside of the panel, which avoids stripping trim or drilling access holes. That saves hours on jobs where the back of the panel is hard to reach.

Electronic dent pullers work by spot welding studs, washers or pull rings to the panel so a slide hammer or pulling bridge can draw the metal back out. Many units also shrink stretched metal, which is what stops a repaired panel from oil-canning afterwards.

You cannot certify a structural repair by eye. A measuring system compares the actual dimensions of the repaired shell against the manufacturer's data for that vehicle, so you know the pull is finished and the geometry is correct.

A plasma cutter cuts conductive metal fast and cleanly with a narrow kerf and a small heat-affected zone, which is why panel shops use it for cutting out damaged sections without distorting the surrounding metal.

Machines are specified by cut capacity — the maximum material thickness a unit will sever and, more importantly, the thickness it will cut cleanly at production speed. Duty cycle and power supply phase matter just as much if the machine runs all day.

Infrared lamps heat the substrate rather than the air, so paint, primer and filler cure from the panel outward. That means shorter cure cycles, less energy burned on heating a whole booth, and a booth freed up sooner for the next job.

Single-arm mobile units suit spot repairs and small panel work; multi-arm and arch systems cover a full side or a complete vehicle. Timer and temperature control let you repeat a cure cycle consistently instead of guessing.

Surface preparation decides the finish. A random orbital sander leaves a fine, non-directional scratch pattern that primer and topcoat fill cleanly, which is why it is the standard sanding machine for panel flatting and filler work.

Dust extraction is not optional in a modern shop. Vacuum-assisted sanders pull dust off the panel as it is cut, keeping abrasives cutting longer, improving visibility, reducing contamination in the booth and protecting operators from airborne particulate.

A tool trolley earns its keep by keeping tooling at the vehicle instead of at the bench. Look at drawer count and depth, slide rating, castor quality and the top work surface — those are what separate a workshop trolley from a domestic tool box.

Fixed cabinets suit a permanent bay or a tooling store; roller trolleys suit technicians who move between lifts and benches. Lockable drawers matter in a shared workshop where tooling loss is a real cost.

Hand-cleaning spray guns wastes solvent, exposes sprayers to fumes and rarely gets the passages properly clear. An enclosed gun washer recirculates cleaning fluid through the gun, cleans the internal channels and cuts turnaround between colours.

Waterborne paint systems need their own cleaning regime — many shops running both technologies use separate solvent and waterborne stations to avoid cross-contamination. We can specify a machine or combination that matches the paint system you run.

An induction heater puts heat into ferrous metal directly through an electromagnetic field. There is no flame, so heat is localised to the component instead of spreading across the panel — the difference between freeing a seized bolt and scorching the surrounding paint and trim.

Typical body-shop uses are releasing bonded glass and moulding adhesive, loosening rusted or seized fasteners, shrinking stretched metal, and fitting or removing bearings. A bearing heater brings the race up to fitting temperature evenly without hammering it on.

Workshop charging is not the same as a home trickle charger. A service bay needs enough charging current to bring a flat battery back within a working day, plus a start-assist or boost function to move vehicles that will not crank.

Match the charger to the system voltage you work on — 12V for most passenger vehicles, 12V/24V switchable for trucks and commercial fleets. Check the battery chemistry too: modern AGM, EFB and gel batteries need a charge profile suited to them.

Load shedding stops a body shop dead: compressors drop pressure, spray booth extraction shuts down and curing cycles are ruined. A correctly sized generator keeps the critical circuits live so booked-in work still leaves the shop on time.

Sizing starts with your starting load, not your running load. Compressors, booth fans and lifts draw a large inrush current on start-up, so the generator needs headroom above the sum of running kW. Three-phase equipment needs a three-phase set — a single-phase unit cannot run it.

A paint shop is more than its booth. Ducting, panelling, wash bay equipment and general accessories are what turn a shell into a working facility — and they are usually specified last, after the main equipment is chosen.

Extraction ducting has to match the airflow of the equipment it serves; undersized runs and bad bends throttle a booth or extraction system that is otherwise correctly specified. Panelling affects light levels, cleanliness and how easily a shop is washed down.
