Choosing a workshop battery charger or jump starter
Workshop charging is not the same as a home trickle charger. A service bay needs enough charging current to bring a flat battery back within a working day, plus a start-assist or boost function to move vehicles that will not crank.
Match the charger to the system voltage you work on — 12V for most passenger vehicles, 12V/24V switchable for trucks and commercial fleets. Check the battery chemistry too: modern AGM, EFB and gel batteries need a charge profile suited to them.
Portable jump starters cover vehicles stuck outside the bay or in a storage yard. Where cars sit for long periods — showroom stock, restoration or repair queues — a maintenance charge keeps batteries from sulphating while they wait.

Battery Chargers & Starters — frequently asked questions
- How much does a workshop battery charger cost in South Africa?
- Price depends on charging current, voltage range and whether the unit includes a start-boost function. Each charger is quoted on request.
- What is the difference between a battery charger and a jump starter?
- A charger replenishes the battery over time. A jump starter delivers a short high-current burst to crank the engine — it starts the vehicle but does not recharge the battery.
- Can one charger handle both 12V and 24V?
- Some units are switchable between 12V and 24V for workshops handling both passenger and commercial vehicles. Tell us your fleet mix and we will specify accordingly.
